REMINISCENCE

RACV City Club, Entry Foyer Commission
2 December 2022

Victoria Hempstead was commissioned to make a major wall sculpture, REMINISCENCE for the RACV City Club Foyer in 2022, a key feature of the RACV Art Collection. The Collection was established in 2003 and features over 1000 artworks, with a focus on contemporary art and supporting Australian living artists.

Heampstead is a Sydney-based artist, who works between sculpture, installation, and drawing. She creates captivating multi-layered artworks, focusing on place, process, and the body's relation to the landscape. Drawing on site-specific research, her works often interpret the Australian landscape using metal, oxidisation processes and natural materials to create abstract renderings of place.

For the RACV Foyer Commission, Hempstead researched how waterways link us to journeys, memory and nostalgia. Responding to the Yarra River, she explored how our waterways weave and connect us - perhaps even collecting our words, our laughter, and moments of life lived next to them.

This commission was accompanied by a behind-the-scene’s exhibition, exploring Hempstead’s process and artworks made in preparation for the final Foyer artwork. Consultation for this commission was undertaken by T Projects, and overseen by Ellen Wignell.
